Pearl Islands, Panama The Pearl Islands are located in the middle of the Gulf of Panama on the Pacific Ocean, 90 kms away from Panama City. All the islands in the caribbean are the most beautiful ones since the colors of the sea are amazingly clear, you can even see the fishes going thriough your feet while you are only a meter away from the sand in the beach. From Panama City, on a plane for only fifteen minutes (Aeroperlas or Air Panama) or by a ferry ride for two hours to Contadora takes you into the land of pirates and pearls where over 90 islands and 130 islets make up the Archipelago de las Perlas, named by Balboa in 1513. Buccaneers hid out here to attack Spanish Armadas laden with treasure. Oysters and their pearls are still found in these aqua colored waters. Over the centuries, pearls harvested here have adorned kings and queens of Europe, they include the 400 year old, 31-carat famous “La Peregrina” pearl now owned by Elizabeth Taylor. The calm waters are great for fishing sailing and snorkeling. The Pearl Islands arose the greed of the Spaniards. Vasco Nunez de Balboa, who discovered and gave name to the Pacific Ocean from a point less than 90 kilometers from San Jose Island, was attracted by its wealth in gold and pearls. Later on, the Pearl Island sheltered famous pirates of different nationalities like England, Norway, Ireland, etc. that for several centuries looted the wealthy Spanish settlements and fleet. The soil is extremely fertile and nourishes a wide variety of vegetation including gallery forests with trees rising 20 metres and higher with occasional arboreal giants. Coconut palms and wild sugar cane are found along the coastline. Many rivers and springs, the main ones flowing steadily year-round, providing for abundant pure fresh waters irrigates San Jose Island in Pearl Islands Panama. There are excellent air connections, you can either take a private yacht (3 hours) or catch a scheduled or charter flight to San Jose Island (20 minutes). There is a compacted gravel airstrip, 1400 metres long and 90 metres wide, which is a very safe one, the flight would be from the Albrook Airport (Gelabart Airport) in the Reverted Area in Panama City. |
